DOMIN8R
I am planning on replacing the front end components of the Accord. I've got some knowledge on replacing these things on my trucks, but not on the cars. The bearings need to be pressed on. Is there a good way to DIY for that? Also what is a good way to remove the old ones? As for the ball joints and tie-rods, if you have any tips or tricks for these I would love to hear them. I've got a Haynes manual for most of it, but actually doing it, there are many things that can be avoided if you know what to watch out for from the start. I know I'll have to get an alignment afterward, I've already lined up a place close by to take it when I'm done. Thanks in advance for any help. -D
James Matteu
The bearings need to be pressed on. Is there a good way to DIY for that? 4 lbs. slide hammer to get them off. To get them back on, put the four bolts through the holes and use them to line up the hub, press slightly. Then thread the bolts in by hand, repeat if one is misaligned. Once the hub is in slightly and the bolts are all hand tight, begin to cross-tighten the four of them with tools and then finally with a torque wrench. As for the ball joints and tie-rods, if you have any tips or tricks for these I would love to hear them. I have been using the same Honda T/N 07MAC-SL00100, Ball Joint Remover, 32mm, since 1999. It cost $167.00 at the time and has been the single greatest purchase ever. I have used it on Accords, Civics, Integras, and CRXs. It can be adjusted to work with 28mm ball joints, but I haven't tried any smaller. Sorry, no tricks, but a few people on here have some pry bar, torch, hammer tricks in getting the ball joints and tie-rods loosened.
DOMIN8R
James, thank you for your insight. I will try those methods. it was the removal and pressing of the wheel bearing I was most concerned about, but your method sounds pretty solid. I am still interested if anyone else has had good luck using other methods. It's always good to have other options to fall back on if one doesn't work. Thanks, -D
James Matteu
No problem! I am always open to new information! I will keep checking back on this thread to see if there is any way I can improve on the way I have been removing-installing these rotor-hub assemblies.
