Problem in tranny in 97 accord

Okay, a friend of a friend asked me to put new brake pads and shoes on his 97 accord today. Well for one, im a big truck mechanic, but ill tackle anything. Something though has gone wrong. When i torqued the wheels, i heard something pop, but it wasnt a wheel stud. You can crank the car and its fine. Put it in gear and moves and nothings wrong. But when you go to park, you can hear a grinding noise. Im thinking its the park pawl that has broke. Anyone ever experience anything like this? Can it be changed without having to pull the tranny?
