so i need a decent sub and maybe an amp

okay so i have these 2 10's in my garage that re just laying there.. not sure if they work but i doubt they are any good. I also need an amp to test said subs. Now since the box for said subs is HUGE i don't feel like taking my entire trunk to fit the subs in there, and i don't want to spend much money on buying a box, amp, and possibly new subs if these are bad. So i thought of buying one of those bazooka subs or w/e they are called. I want to just find something around $150 or so that has a built in amp, nothing too crazy. i'm not looking for any competition grade subs, i just want something to give my music a little thump and take a load off of my poor little satellites

any suggestions?

after a little searching on crutchfield and local audio store websites, i found this

http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Ite...&tab=review

i'm just not too sure about the whole 100 watt PEAK power thing.. that sounds a bit low for a $200 sub... anyone ever own one of these that can tell me if they are worth the money?

another $100 for this one, but the figures look a bit more promising

here's yet another one.. it's a package deal and it looks like a nice price. but i've never really heard of these subs. anyone know anything about them?

MTX stuff is usually pretty good

You don't have to get an amp to test it, get an OHM-meter.

If you pull the subs out of the box, check what the OHM-rating is (it should be on the back of each sub)

Put the meter on the terminals and see if your reading is close to the OHM rating (ie. if the OHM rating is supposed to be 4OHMs, it should read 3.8 or something)

If it's bad/blown it will either read 0, or a lot different from what it should be

Hope this helps!

i'm probably just gunna go with that MTX package.. it seems pretty cheap and more reliable than the mystery subs are. the subs have no name brand anywhere on them and on the back of the subs, the magnet is completely blank. no logos or anything there. hehe

Ever shoot skeet? Lol! Nah there's a use for those subs...pry the magnet off the back, it has helped me numerous times around my garage. When I'm afraid to loose a screw, I magnetize my screwdrivers! A few swipes against the magnet and I can prevent losing screws to my engine bay >_<

just a fast rundown of the products you are looking at. . . .

The Bazooka tubes are crap. Especially for 200.00. Stay away from them.

The Infinity Bass link is actually a really decent sounding sub for what it is. My problem is that they are somewhat easy to blow and they dont get very loud. There are very few occasions that i have recommended them to people.

The MTX's are garbage too. . sorry to say. Its their bottom end entry stuff.

If you answer some questions for me. . i can point you in the right direction.

- What kind of system do you want? SQ? (easy on the ears, nice accurate musical system), SPL? (just shake crap), or SQL (a good sounding system that gets decently loud as well)

- What type of music do you mainly listen too

- very important, whats your budget

- how big can we make the box? In fact, what car is this going in?

- Do you have an aftermarket head unit? Or are you trying to run sub/amp off the stock head unit?

- are you capable of building your own box? This will save you a ton of money

I urge you not to completely trust what i say as well. Get second opinions and do research on anything anyone advises you to buy. And finally, dont rely on the looks or the brand name of a product, looks are deceiving and house hold companies make their high end stuff and their crappy low end stuff.

SQL, definitely. I listen to alot of the rock-hardcore-grunge.. pretty much all genres of rock actually.. anything from sublime to nirvana to avenged sevenfold and five finger death punch... i also listen to some rap like aesop rock or hiphop like fort minor.

the car it's going in is a 92 S13 240sx.. the hatchback version.. so i've got alot of room, just not alot of money to be spending (i'm trying to save up for my next college semester and an SR20DET)

no i can't really build my own box.. i might know some people who can but don't count on that.

the only reason the MTX appealed to me was because it was cheap and came with just about everything i needed for one really low price, and i'm not looking for anything too hard hitting. sure i don't mind it being heard a little bit from the outside of the car but i don't need to rattle windows on their panes or knock pictures off the wall.

These would be right up your ally

http://www.caraudiodeals.com/audio-re10d4-...fer-p-1595.html

low power, hits deep, dont require a large enclosure

A nice little amp to push them

http://www.hifisoundconnection.com/Shop/Co...sid/0/SFV/30046

A small box. . .although i would just build a sealed enclosure. Its pretty easy to do.

and of course. . a wiring kit

http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseac...Product_ID=6062

All in all, a pretty decent budget system. . . . will be well worth the money in comparison to the mtx set your looking at.

If nothing else I found two twelves and an amp at best buy in an open box deal for dirt cheap and they hit really nice in my Del Sol, but I got zero airspace to worry about lol.

Hey OP, you think you could get a picture of the subs, mainly trying to see how big the magnet is. I have run across stuff like this in the past and they were some of the best subs i ever had.
