At some point during the engine warm up in cold weather only, the engine starts an idle seek by revving to about 2000 rpm and then immediately dropping to about 1000 rpm (fast idle seek). Here's what I know 1. Coolant is fresh and topped off 2. Fast Idle air valve was been replaced one year ago with no effect 3. The fast idle seek only occurs when the ambient outside air temperature is less than 50* and therefore on cold days the fast idle seeks appears to go away as soon as the ambeint air temperature in the engine compartment reaches 50*. Therefore to test any fix requires cooperation from the weather and the car to completely cool down to below 50* 4. When first started on a cold morning, the fast idle seek doesn't start right away. Turtlehead Posted January 23, 2013 Share Posted January 23, 2013 One more thing you can do is with the air intake hose removed, start the car and put you finger over the lower port on the fire wall side. It should suck your finger up to it if it is good, if there is no vaccum then replace it. Test when temperature allows. The other thing that it could be is the engine coolant temperature sensor. Jeff Collision Posted January 24, 2013 Share Posted January 24, 2013 A bad idle air control valve will prevent adequate air flow to the engine and will result in increasingly lower RPMs when idling. The number of RPMs, while idling, will vary a bit based on the individual vehicle but is generally considered low when below 800 RPM. The RPMs will increase to normal levels when the accelerator is pressed. So, it is better to replace the idle air control valve. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
